Robert was born on April 7, 1940, in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, to Thomas and Helen Bevan. He spent most of his childhood and teenage years in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from high school in 1958, he attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education. He later earned his master’s degree in administration, reflecting his dedication to educational leadership. It was at Tarkio College that he met the love of his life, Nancy. The two were married in 1963, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 62 years.
Together, Robert and Nancy began their teaching careers in Pomeroy, Iowa, where they would serve the community for 36 years. Robert was a devoted high school history teacher, drama director, and speech coach. During his career, he also served as a school principal, providing steady leadership and support to students and staff alike. He directed numerous plays and musicals, organized and facilitated speech contests across the state, and was deeply involved in community theater in Pomeroy. He believed strongly in the power of education and the arts to shape young lives and took great pride in his students’ accomplishments.
Robert’s commitment to his community extended beyond the school. He served on the Pomeroy town council and on the board of the Methodist Church. An avid golfer, he enjoyed many rounds with his wife, family, and friends. He also served on the Fonda Golf Course board and helped organize local tournaments.
In retirement, Robert and Nancy began spending winters in Arizona as “snowbirds.” They quickly grew to love the sunshine and warm weather and eventually made Arizona their permanent home.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Nancy Bevan; his brother, Thomas Bevan of Circleville, Ohio; his son, Scott Bevan and wife Kim of Pleasanton, California, and their children, Matthew Bevan and Brittany Bevan; and his daughter, Suzanne Rotert and husband Christopher Rotert of Gilbert, Arizona, and their children, Alexa Instine and Morgan Rotert.
He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
