Born on September 25th, 1931 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, Ray graduated from Morehead
State University with a bachelor's degree in Education and from Xavier University with a
Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling. Ray married Nancy Reed, his college sweetheart,
a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, in 1957. Ray was a Korean War Veteran where he
served as Sergeant First Class.
Ray worked in the Green Local School District in Franklin Furnace, Ohio as a teacher, coach
and guidance counselor for 31 years. After retiring from Green, Ray worked as a guidance
counselor at the Juvenile Detention Center in Franklin Furnace for 7 years before fully retiring.
Ray and Nancy lived in Franklin Furnace from 1962 until 2008 when they moved to Scottsdale,
Arizona. Ray was a member of the North Scottsdale United Methodist Church.
A hands-on father and grandfather, he shared his love of sports with his children and enjoyed
teaching them the game of golf. He played with his grandchildren and could even be found up
in a tree at the age of 80! He spent many years in retirement traveling to New Smyrna Beach,
Florida, where his family would gather for the beach, great seafood and time together.
He was a lifelong teacher and coach, staying close to his former students and players for his
entire life. It was common for former students to visit his home even after moving to Arizona.
Ray was a skilled golfer who enjoyed his golf and friends at the Portsmouth Elks for many years
until moving to Arizona. Additionally, Ray was an avid gardener who was known to have a green
thumb while providing his family and friends with delicious fruits and vegetables from his
garden. A lifelong University of Kentucky basketball fan, Ray was almost always tuned in when
the Wildcats were playing.
