He grew up in the Central Valley of California and went to school in Tulare, CA where he graduated high school and went to The College of the Sequoias.
Mel joined the Navy in February 1954 and attended the Navy School of Music in Washington D.C. where he played in the Navy Band.
After being honorably discharged he became a policeman in Palo Alto, CA. He eventually began working for State Farm insurance company and retired as a Litigation Specialist after 35 years in Scottsdale AZ.
Mel had many hobbies & played multiple instruments such as clarinet, saxophone, trumpet & guitar. He also painted, carved and enjoyed photography.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother Stanley Latimer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lolita, and children Toni Ellis, Vicki Hart, Neal Hamilton, and Daniel Hamilton, along with 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
