I was in total shock when I heard about marcello's passing I was also in shock when grandma Virginia passed away they have been a part of my family since I was a little girl You will be greatly missed love to you all

I was shocked to see that Marcello had passed. A longggg time ham radio friend from San Jose. He was a great guy and very good friend. R.I.P. Marcello

Marcello P. Soliven. I will always remember him. Marcello is my father in law and very much a second dad to me in many ways.

I knew a lot about him long before we ever met. Early on, Sabrina pointed out our similarities and shared many childhood anecdotes, and techy stories about his hobbies and interests.

So much so, That I believed that she may had embellished the details quite a bit. Boy was ever I wrong.

One visit to his home, filled with electronic equipment and gadgets, had confirmed Sabrinas stories beyond any reasonable doubt.


The first time we met, Marcello and Jazz Musician, Dan St. Marselle were actively working on the final touches of an upcoming album and were debating the order of the tracks on the CD. 

Having completed an elective course of study in Jazz, I had recently developed new appreciation for the genre.I was very impressed by our first encounters.


Marcello had a passion for all things electronic, especially amateur radio.

His on air identity is KJ6QA, the FCC designated call sign.

He was an Advanced Class Operator which is the highest level achievable. He made many friends, all over the world from making global contacts over the decades.

Marcello encouraged me to study and get licensedmyself, and he was the first person I shared the news with after passing my test.

I wanted him to be proud of me, and he was.




Marcello was always encouraging and quick to offer helping hand.

One experience I will never forget,after 2 failed attempts to repair a radio on my own, I asked him for help which he gladly offered.

Side by side, we both concentrated on removing the cover from the broken radio, while looking through the magnifying glass mounted to the repair bench on a swivel arm.

Our first look inside under the bright light exposed the mess I had made trying to fix it myself. Rookie mistakes. I was embarrassed, and looked away sure that I had ruined it, but Marcello didn't skip a beat. He looked up and happily said We can Fix It, spun around on his tool to grab some parts and went to work.

I got 2 more years of use from that radio thanks to him.

One of my favorite things about Marcello was his sense of humor. He would heckle, me about only having two antennas on my car as opposed to his 6, he would say Justin, you need to PorkyPine that thing up.

He loved a play on words.

If someone mentioned that they had just flown in from out of state, he would respond, boy your arms must be tired!


Dinner out at asian restaurants was always a good time.
He would greet the server in the native language often leaving them confused as how to respond.

He would playful expose the restaurant staff as being the wrong kind of Asian if a Korean was serving Sushi, or if the Teppan chef was Chinese, and found humor in the fact that most Americans dining were none the wiser.

He would dismiss the table Chefs showmanship of fireballs, sizzle, and knife tricks, as simply...Mesmerizing the Round-Eye


Marcello touched a lot of people in this world, myself included. 

He was a mentor and friend to me and I will miss him, and I am thankful to have been able to share so many experiences together
