He was lovingly known to his many friends and family as “Len.”
Len was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on November 9, 1928 to Howard and Myrtle Horn. He was raised and educated in Ft. Wayne. He received his BA and Master degrees from Indiana University.
He served his country and was honorably discharged from both the United States Marines Corps Reserve and the United States Army.
Len married his high school sweetheart Jean Hoffman, also of Ft. Wayne, on April 4, 1953.
He moved his wife and two young children from Ft. Wayne to Mesa, Arizona in late August of 1961. Len had been a teacher in Ft. Wayne and continued to teach for Mesa Public Schools upon arriving in Mesa. Len and Jean owned and operated Mesa Kindergarten, one of the first private kindergartens in Arizona. He continued as an educator throughout his career and retired as a school principal.
Len loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time camping. He was an avid Cubs fan until the Arizona Diamondbacks came to Phoenix. Len and Jean also enjoyed to travel and did so as often as possible. Len’s deep faith in the Lord was the major priority in his life and he loved to shared that faith with family and friends.
He is survived by his son, Leonard C. Horn and his wife, Gena of Glendale, Arizona; his daughter Janet C. Vanden Heuvel and her husband, Jeff of Young, Arizona. He was the proud grandfather to Alyssa, Tyler, Aimee and Rylee as well as great grandkids, Keaton, Antonio, Logan and Rowen.
He is also survived by brother, Normand and wife Shelvy Horn of Bloomington, Indiana; by sisters Carole and husband Kenneth Hans of Alexandria, Indiana and Sharon Fisher of Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
A celebration of life will be held May 26, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at VIA Church, 740 North Power Rd., Mesa, AZ 8520, (480) 985-8121.
