Joann Murawski, 80, of Gilbert, Arizona, passed away on October 17. Born on August 8, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the middle child of John Waszkiewicz and Gina Gonzalez, growing up alongside her older sister, Sharon, and younger brother, Ronald.
At age 16, Joann met the love of her life, Paul Murawski Sr. They married soon after and began a journey that would span more than six decades. As a devoted military wife for 25 years, she supported her husband throughout his Air Force career, creating a loving home for her family wherever they were stationed. After years of military service and travel, the family settled in Washington State, where Paul began his civilian career with Boeing. Washington would remain home for many decades as they raised their family, built lifelong friendships, and created countless cherished memories before relocating to Arizona in 2021.
Joann was a dedicated mother to her three children, Paul Jr., Steve, and Heather, and later found some of her greatest joy in being a grandmother. Family was always at the center of her life, and she poured her love into every gathering, celebration, and everyday moment.
After years devoted to military family life and raising her children, Joann spent more than 20 years as an elementary paraeducator. She had a special gift for working with children and touched countless young lives through her patience, kindness, and encouragement. Her Catholic faith was the foundation of her life, and she faithfully served her church community through volunteer work, ministry, and raising her family in the love of Christ.
Beyond her devotion to family, faith, and service, Joann will be remembered for the warmth and joy she brought to everyday life. She was known for her homemade spaghetti sauce, her famous crescent rolls at holiday meals, and for creating traditions that brought generations together. Christmas Eve meant gathering for a cherished Italian dinner before attending Midnight Mass, a celebration that reflected her deep love of both family and faith. She loved music and could often be found singing along and snapping her fingers to the beat. Through her nicknames, funny sayings, and gift for making people feel welcomed and loved, she created memories her family will carry with them forever.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Ronald Waszkiewicz.
She is survived by her loving husband, Paul Murawski Sr.; her children, Paul Jr., Steve, and Heather; her grandchildren, Paul III, Ashley, Riley, Cole, Luke, Faith, Ava, and Dylan; her sister, Sharon; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Joann's legacy lives on in the family she loved, the children she helped educate, the faith she shared, and the traditions she passed on. Her love remains present at family tables, holiday gatherings, and in the laughter sparked by one of her unforgettable expressions. Though she will be deeply missed, the warmth, faith, and joy she brought to others will continue to be felt for generations to come.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass for Joann on Thursday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church in Gilbert, Arizona.
