James Edward Guthrie Jr.

James Edward Guthrie Jr. (fondly known as “King James”), age 93, passed away peacefully, leaving a legacy of love, wisdom, and devotion to his family. Born on June 15, 1931, in Warren, Ohio, Jim lived a life guided by principles of generosity, education, and faith.

Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Alma Teegarden Guthrie, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. He often said that choosing Alma was the best decision he ever made, and his love for her remained steadfast throughout their life together. He deeply missed her after her passing and is now joyfully reunited with her.

Jim was a proud father to his two children, Laura Guthrie Burton and Paul Guthrie, and a devoted grandfather to five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He delighted in his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, finding immense joy in his family's accomplishments and milestones.

Jim’s passion for financial literacy and education was a defining feature of his life. He ensured that all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren had access to higher education, viewing it as the cornerstone of opportunity and growth. He also believed in the transformative power of travel as an essential part of education. His strong belief in faith provided a grounding force in his life and inspired those around him.

Jim served his country in the Navy for two years aboard the icebreaker USS Edisto, a role he remembered with pride and fondness. A man of profound generosity, Jim was always devoted to his family, giving freely of his time, wisdom, and resources. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, and his kindness and selflessness will be remembered by all who knew him.

All who knew and loved Jim are invited to celebrate his life at North Scottsdale United Methodist Church on February 16, at 12pm.

Jim’s legacy lives on in the lives of his family and the countless memories they hold dear. He will be deeply missed and forever celebrated.
