Dr. Biever was born in 1933 to Jerry & Alta Mae Biever of Hot Springs, South Dakota. He attended Hot Springs High School and South Dakota State University before going on to complete his Medical Doctorate at the University of Nebraska. He graduated with honors and took great joy in playing in the band. He married his first wife, Harla Jean (Heiser) in 1954. They relocated to Spokane, WA for his internship at Deaconess Hospital. Dr. Biever then joined Dr. Slichter to open a family practice that remained prominent in the Spokane area for over thirty years. During this busy time, Dr. Biever served as a Captain in the Army National Guard Medical Corps. Gene and Harla also adopted and raised four children. They later divorced.
Gene found the love of his life in his wife Jeanne and they were married in 1983. After a brief semi-retirement in Sedona, AZ, Dr. Biever went back to work in 1992 as a medical doctor on the Pineridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Gene and Jeanne settled in Hot Springs, SD where they made many special memories in Gene’s hometown. They also traveled over 200,000 miles by motorcycle in North America and went on many other memorable trips around the world.
In 2012 Dr. Biever decided it was time to finally retire after 50 years in medicine. He and Jeanne relocated one last time to Phoenix, AZ. He found more time for woodworking and traveling before falling ill in late 2017. Though his family misses him terribly, they take comfort that he is finally at peace. His love and light will continue to guide us for the rest of our days. He was loved and respected by the countless lives he touched.
Gene is survived by his wonderful wife and partner, Jeanne, his two sons, Brent and Roch Biever, his two daughters, Lisa (Gerald) Pechia and Krista Gonzalez, his three stepsons, Kevin, Scott (Laurie) and Randy Farnes as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as many treasured friends and his hunting buddies with whom he is likely cavorting with right about now.
We will always remember “Gene Biever gives a dam.”
A celebration of life was held at Unity Church of Surprise on May 27th, 2018.
