June 1, 1957 – October 3, 2026
Daniel John Collins entered eternal life on October 3, 2026, a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and physician who cared deeply for his patients. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on June 1, 1957, he was the second of four sons born to Mary Ellen (La Chapelle) and Gerald Collins. He cherished his early years in New England before the family traded harsh winters for Arizona sunshine in 1970.
At Peoria High School, Dan (’75) met LeeAnn Loerzel (’76). Their friendship deepened over the years, leading to their marriage in 1987. Catholic faith was the foundation and strength of their lives and guided them as they raised their family. He took great pride in his four children and their accomplishments. He treasured time with his eight grandchildren, building models, playing with Lincoln Logs, and baking together. Their energy brought him joy and brightened his days.
Dan earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Arizona in 1980, followed by a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Arizona State University in 1982. He entered the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1986 and maintained a lifelong affection for the university. Bear Down! He had a lifelong love of medicine, a deep dedication to his patients, and a strong commitment to his profession. Through his private practice in the Verde Valley and nearly two decades with the Department of Veterans Affairs, he earned the trust and respect of patients and colleagues alike. He was known for his intelligence, kindness, and willingness to listen, treating each patient with compassion and respect.
Through years of significant health challenges, he showed strength and perseverance. LeeAnn cared for him with extraordinary devotion, and he was deeply grateful for her love and support. Outside of family and medicine, he enjoyed painting, cooking, and collecting Native American pottery. He will be remembered for his humor, quiet strength, and the love he shared with those closest to him.
Dan is survived by his wife, LeeAnn; children, Joan Millerfee, Tylar Ryan (Christine), Ellen Leuzzi (Richard), and Sam Collins; brothers, Jim (Gail) and John (Christal); father, Gerald; and eight grandchildren: Vincent, Jonah, and Shepherd Millerfee; Dalton, Hudson, and Vera Ryan; and Collin and Dean Leuzzi. He was preceded in death by his beautiful mother, Mary Ellen; his beloved brother, Kevin; and his son-in-law, Alex Millerfee.
Services for Dan will be held at St. Pius X in Tucson, Arizona. The rosary will be prayed on November 19th. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on November 20, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception. Interment will take place November 23.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dan’s memory to the University of Arizona College of Medicine Primary Care Physician Scholarship Program.
