Dana Campbell Saylor, a trailblazing leader and relentless advocate for social justice, passed away on May 13, 2024. Her passing was peaceful, following a Mother’s Day filled with laughter and love. Her contributions to public service and her relentless advocacy for women, children, and underserved communities have left an indelible mark on Arizona, as well as all who knew her.
Not only a formidable leader, Dana was also a beloved mother to her two sons, Shayne and Adam. Her nurturing spirit, wisdom, and love have left a lasting impact on their lives. She is also survived by her sister, Rhonda, her cousins, Pamela and Jim, and a vast community of friends and colleagues who will always cherish her memory. Dana was preceded in death by her beloved Francis "Penny" Gaines, with whom she is happily side by side once again.
Dana's journey began on October 8th,1946, in Des Moines Iowa. She became a force for change, eventually serving in the administrations of four Arizona governors where she made significant strides in policy development and community initiatives. Notably, during Governor Hull's administration, she served as the Director of Children, Youth, and Families, where she developed the Governor's Commission on the Health Status of Women and Families, addressing critical community health issues.
Her tenure as the CEO of the Maricopa County YWCA was marked by transformative initiatives that demonstrated her unwavering commitment to women and children. Dana established a 501(c)(4) advocacy for the YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix, fostering a strong mentoring and advocacy voice for Arizona women. She also developed a partnership with Madison Street Veterans Association to establish a shelter for homeless veterans, and created the YWCA Metropolitan Women’s Forum, a platform dedicated to addressing issues pertinent to women in the metropolitan area.
Dana's impact extended to numerous boards and commissions, including serving as the board chair for the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits during a pivotal time in its development, the Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging, the Phoenix Commission on Arts and Culture, and the ASU West Campus Community Board. Her tenure on the Board of Directors for Arouet was marked by her dedication to reducing recidivism and supporting fair-chance employment opportunities. Her leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping these organizations' missions and initiatives.
Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Arizona Community Foundation in Dana’s name, ensuring that her legacy of compassion and dedication to social justice continues.
Dana Campbell Saylor will be dearly missed, but her spirit and accomplishments will inspire and guide us forever. Rest in peace, Dana, and know that we will continue your work by getting into trouble, ruffling feathers, and fighting for the rights of all.
