Walter Teagle, born January 8, 1932, in Pensacola, Florida, passed away after an extended illness on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in Tallahassee, Florida at the age of 92. He graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, with a BA degree in Psychology. Immediately after college, he enlisted in the United States Navy, attending flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station and was designated a Naval Aviator by the Naval Air Training Command in 1954.
He served as a navy pilot until 1958, reaching the rank of Lieutenant, flying many missions with distinction, and landing on aircraft carriers. He cherished his time in the military and enjoyed regaling family with stories of being stationed in various places, especially Argentia, Newfoundland, flying the Arctic, over the North Pole, and even into then-Soviet airspace, on reconnaissance missions. More than his military service, however, Walter cherished the great love of his life; he delighted in nearly 66 years of marriage to Louise LeVasseur Teagle, from April 12, 1958, until her death January 12, 2024.
After Walter left the Navy, they lived in New Orleans, where he worked for Eastern Airlines, returning to Pensacola to be near family and raise their son, Blan. In Pensacola, Walter had a successful 30-year career with the Social Security Administration, while Louise taught at Pensacola Junior College. After retirement, Walter and Louise moved to Tallahassee in 1999 to be near Blan, his wife, Lili, and their precious grandchildren, Tyler and Anna.
Walter will be remembered particularly for his kindness and devotion to family. He was humble and self-effacing, preferring to reflect the spotlight on others. He always put family members ahead of himself and it brought him immeasurable joy to do so. His legacy will be the example he set through his abiding love and selfless commitment to supporting the dreams and aspirations of family.
Walter is survived by his son, Blan Teagle, daughter-in-law, Lili Quintiliani, grandson, Tyler Teagle, and wife, Hope English-Teagle, granddaughter, Anna Teagle, his devoted sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vivien and Bob Scrip, who have been tireless pillars of support, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Walter and Louise were members of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Pensacola, Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Tallahassee, then Saint Peter's Anglican Church, where they worshiped and had dear friends for the last 19 years.
Although we are deeply saddened at this loss, the family takes comfort knowing, after a seven-month involuntary separation, Walter and Louise are reunited in an even better place than the loving, nurturing environment they created for us who were blessed to be with them here on Earth.
A celebration of Walter’s life will be scheduled later.
