Roland Ware McKenzie

Roland was born in Portsmouth, VA on April 2, 1942 to the late James Roland McKenzie and Nolie Furman McKenzie of Hertford, NC. Raised in Portsmouth, he graduated from Cradock High School. He later went on to pursue higher education at Danville Technical College, earning an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Roland built a long and respected career as a Mechanical Engineer, contributing his expertise to several companies throughout his working life, receiving numerous patent awards and several design accolades for both automotive and military technologies before retiring from a 35-year career at General Motors at the age of 58. Known for his strong work ethic, practical intelligence, and steady reliability, he took great pride in providing for his family and in the craftsmanship inherent in his profession.

As a younger man, Roland was actively involved in the Jaycees, valuing service, fellowship, and community engagement. In later years, he found his greatest happiness in the simple and meaningful moments of life — spending time with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors, and fishing whenever he had the opportunity.

Roland is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Julia Anne Copeland McKenzie; his two sons, Keith (Kim) and Brian (Kristine); three grandchildren, Connor J., Ryan S, and Braden L. McKenzie; and his sister, Lorraine McKenzie Saunders (Kenneth H. Jr.). He leaves behind a legacy defined by devotion to family, faith, quiet strength, and enduring love.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Emerald Coast Hospice, Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital, Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the many neighbors and friends whose compassion, care, and support brought comfort during Roland’s final days.

A celebration of Roland’s life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
