Roger Messimer 82, of Crawfordville, Florida passed away on September 10, 2024 after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Roger was born in Jackson, Michigan on January 16, 1942 to William Messimer and Evelyn Yount (Ebbie) Messimer. John Messimer is his only sibling and he survives. Roger had two children, Sarah Jean (Mike) Shapiro and Aaron Theodore (Ted) Messimer. Grandsons Noah and Jonah Shapiro were his special loves and very close to his heart.
Roger graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1960 where he played sports, being a star baseball pitcher and later a member of the championship Brooklyn Braves in the Jackson Twilight baseball league. He was a distance runner and competed in many 5k and 7k runs including the Mackinac Island Michigan run. Roger was an Army veteran serving as a chemical technician and a member of the American Legion. He was involved in the grocery business all of his working life and partners with his brother John in owning and operating Bill’s IGA Market in Brooklyn, Michigan for many years.
His memory was sharp especially in remembering movies and the movie casts. Roger possessed a remarkable memory of sports and sporting events. He was a fan of Michigan University sports teams and the Detroit Lions and Tigers.
He was a member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Tallahassee, Florida and All Saints Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, Michigan. He was an avid painter and belonged to the Tallahassee Senior Center Art Club where he won many awards for his paintings. He belonged to the Wild Hogs Bike Club of Crawfordville, Florida and biked 3-4 times a week.
A private family burial and celebration of life will be conducted in early November for friends and family.
