He was born on February 7, 1943, in Mortons Gap, Kentucky. He grew up in a loving and large family that included his father and mother, three brothers, twin sister, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Bradenton, Florida. Theirs was a household rooted in the Christian faith and service to others.
After attending Manatee County schools, he worked as a groundskeeper at Sarasota Jungle Gardens, Southern Methodist University, and Manatee and Greenville Baptist churches. These positions allowed him to work outdoors and to create spaces for others to enjoy. Buddy liked being of service to others, which led to positions with Goodwill Industries, Inc. and E.J. Daniels Ministries, and, in his later years, at the local Winn Dixie. No matter the location or job title, Buddy was a devoted worker. He was well-known for his ability to connect with others. He never met a stranger and was quick to share a joke, a smile, or friendly exchange.
Buddy had a servant’s heart and was actively involved in church ministry throughout his life. This service was not because he was a preacher’s kid or out of obligation. It was because he had a deep, abiding faith in Jesus Christ and wanted others to know Him. He enjoyed going on mission trips to share the Gospel, but knew that even sweeping up after a church gathering was a way to show God’s love.
Music was an important part of Buddy’s life and ministry. He was a vocalist in choirs, quartets and other ensembles, in addition to his regular church attendance. This talent allowed him to travel abroad as part of the Celebration Choir at First Baptist Church Orlando, Florida. Aside from his love of sacred music, Buddy enjoyed classic country and western tunes but appreciated many genres. He had an incredible ear and could easily find harmonies others could not. His wide vocal range allowed him to sing tenor, baritone, or bass.
Those who knew Buddy will remember his fondness for “junk” food, especially Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, Mr. Goodbar, and Three Musketeers candy bars. He had goodies stowed in his coat pocket, nightstand, and glove compartment, just in case he needed to satisfy his sweet tooth. Buddy was an aficionado of British comedy shows and old westerns and could cite entire scenes or share little-known facts about the cast. Even though he was easygoing, Buddy was not afraid to be an individual and have his own opinions. He was the lone Florida Gator fan in a family full of Florida State Seminoles and found himself in the minority preferring Pepsi when everyone else wanted Coke. Yet, Buddy deeply loved his family and wanted to be a friend to all.
Buddy was preceded in death by his father, Rev. J. Thad Entzminger; mother, Bernice Hilton Entzminger; and two brothers, John Entzminger, Jr.; Dr. William “Bill” Entzminger: and a beloved niece, Jeanie Ervin. He is survived by his twin sister, Bernice “SISSY” Kilpatrick, and his brother, Paul (Debi) Entzminger of Ft. Worth, TX. Additionally, he leaves behind many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and cousins who will miss him dearly.
The family appreciates the many friends who were faithful to send cards and other correspondence to brighten Buddy’s day during what they hoped would be a period of convalescence. They are grateful for your prayers–those for healing and those for peace. Special thanks to the staff of The Terrace at Ivey Acres and Gentiva Hospice for the care and compassion they showed Buddy during his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Bethel Baptist Church (3125 W Socrum Loop Rd, Lakeland, FL 33810) on June 20, 2025, at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at the Bethel Baptist Cemetery.
