Lawrence “Larry” Leroy Swain Jr., a beloved member of the Tallahassee community, went home to be with the Lord on February 20, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on May 3, 1940, and spent his childhood in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Larry met the love of his life, Naomi Swain, in Virginia. Their journey together led them to Miami, Florida, where they were married. It was through Naomi’s love and guidance that Larry came to know Christ—a transformation that shaped the rest of his life. A devoted husband and father, he embraced Naomi’s two sons, Jimmy and Jeff, as his own, officially adopting them in 1976. In 1970, Larry and Naomi welcomed their youngest son, Mark, while living in Longview, Texas. The family made Tallahassee their home in 1975.
Throughout his life, Larry dedicated himself to ministry and service. He served as an Associate Pastor, Bus Minister, and high school teacher at First Baptist Church of West Hollywood and later at Temple Baptist Church in Tallahassee. After retiring, he continued to serve his community as a security guard at Westminster Oaks.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife, Naomi Swain, and his sons: Larry Broadwell, Jim Swain, Jeff Swain, and Mark Swain. He was a proud grandfather to Josh, Jenna, Sierra, Alexa, Kai, Harli, Dash, and Jaden Swain, as well as Courtney Wheeler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Sr. and Ollie Bell, and his sister-in-law and her husband, Margaret and Paul Westberry.
Larry will always be remembered for his steadfast faith, his passion for sharing the Gospel, and his love for family and friends, not to mention the impact he made on young lives through his ministry. His legacy of kindness, service, and devotion to the Lord will continue to inspire those who knew him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Westminster Oaks community and Big Bend Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Westminster Oaks’ Maguire Center, 4449 Meandering Way, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
(A free parking garage is located directly across the street from the Maguire Center and is accessible by elevator.)
