
Juan was born on September 30, 1947, in Fort Davis, Texas to José Fernandez Duran and Cecilia Doporto Duran. He spent much of his youth in New Mexico after his family relocated to Loving, where he attended junior high school before later graduating from Carlsbad High School in 1966.
That same year, Juan proudly entered the United States Army, beginning what would become a distinguished 23-year military career in service to his country. During his time in the Army, he served as an Infantry Rifleman, Tactical Wireman, Military Police officer, and held positions within Airborne Ranger, and Special Forces units. He maintained a high-level security clearance throughout his service. Following his active-duty career, Juan continued to serve in the National Guard until receiving an honorable discharge.
After his military service Juan returned to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where he worked with the EPD division of Westinghouse. There, he played a vital role in helping to build, maintain, and inspect nuclear containment vessels, many of which are utilized at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility.
Juan was a proud supporter of Native American children’s causes and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe and Manuel, and his sisters, Mary, Connie, Delia, his grandson Caleb, and stepson Kyle Mayrhofen.
Juan is survived by his loving wife Vicki, his sons, John Jr. and Jeffrey; his stepsons, Christopher; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and extended family members in Albuquerque, Carlsbad, and Lovington, New Mexico.
Cremation has been arranged. A memorial graveside service with military honors is tentatively scheduled for1330 on March 30, 2026, at the Barrancas National Cemetery located at Naval Air Station Pensacola
