Joan Dawn Merz

Joanie Dawn Merz, age 77, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, after a long and courageous fifteen-year struggle with Type One Diabetes. Her life was full of love, creativity, and meaningful relationships, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.

Born on August 21, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, Joanie was the daughter of George and Beatrice Sigeti. She grew up in Brooklyn and later moved through various cities, including Atlanta and Pensacola. Joanie was preceded in death by her first husband, William Charles Merz; her second husband, Wally Roberson; her parents; and her younger brother, Robert Sigeti. She is survived by her sons, Justin and Jordan Merz, their wives, Torissa Tsai-Merz and Anna McClelland, and her three grandchildren, Genevieve, William, and Jordan. She is also remembered by her brother George Sigeti and her sister Patti Engle, along with many friends and relatives she made throughout her life.

Joanie attended City University of New York in 1969, where she met Billy—who would become the love of her life. They married soon after and built a life together filled with love and adventure. She was a talented and passionate decorator, running a successful interior design business called JM Interiors in Atlanta during the 1980s and 1990s. She loved creating beautiful spaces and was known for her eye for detail and style.

Her dedication to her family was extraordinary. In 1995, she donated a kidney to her eldest son, Justin, demonstrating her deep love and commitment. Joanie’s faith was a guiding force in her life, and she was actively involved in ministries through Mount Paran Church of God, which provided her comfort during difficult times.

Travel was a big part of her life, and she especially loved Italy, which she visited often—calling it her second home. She enjoyed exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and sharing these adventures with friends and family. Her love of fashion, music, movies, and holiday festivities added joy and excitement to her life. Some of her most treasured memories include spending Fourth of July on her beachfront balcony in Pensacola or Christmas trips to Disneyland, where she loved spoiling her grandchildren.

Joanie shared a close and special bond with her sister Patti,who supported her through her life's most difficult challenges. Her relationship with Wally was short but meaningful, bringing her happiness during a later chapter of her life. She was known for her sense of humor, shopping trips, enjoying wine with friends, and her love for travel and new experiences.

Joanie’s warmth, generosity, and vibrant personality touched many lives. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her legacy of love, faith, and resilience will always stay in our hearts.
