August 4, 1954 – September 2, 2023
One of five children, Gary, fondly known as the older, ‘little’ brother was born in August 1954. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in May 1972, making the world his oyster. Gary found many pearls that enriched his life’s journey.
Family and friends have endless stories of Gary’s adventures and antics. Those closest to him knew Gary’s two strongest personal trademarks were his booming, infectious laugh, and his denim overalls. He was enchanted by breath-taking landscapes, genius architecture, and history. Gary’s work and interests took him to many exotic areas across the world; often preferring to venture off the beaten path. One of his greatest achievements was riding his motorcycle across the United States to see all the small-town culture it still had to offer.
Gary was the “hardworking man”, demonstrated by his early occupation working in a West Virginia coal mine to retiring from a career ensuring metal welds were safe in extreme environments. His attention to detail (measure, mark, measure again, mark, measure a third time, mark) taught him the pleasure of becoming a skilled woodworker. He handcrafted masterpiece creations such as wooden wheels and complete bedroom sets.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Inez Anderson, his sister, Peggy Holayter, and brothers-in-law, Ronald Montford and William Gwaltney. Although they are gone, Gary incorporated his loved ones’ knowledge and experiences to determine his next life adventure. He is survived by his Siblings; Glenda Gwaltney, Betty Montford, and Kenneth (Janet) Anderson; Children John ‘Red’ (Barbara) Simpkins, Glenn (Salina) Anderson and Savannah (Michael) Papes; and his granddaughter, Alyssa Anderson.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial tributes can be made in Gary’s name as a charitable donation to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital.
