Billy Frank Herring

Mr. Billy Frank Herring, 78, passed away peacefully on July 18th, 2026, in Tallahassee, Florida. Born on Lewey Frank Herring and Nellie “Lois” Price Gilchrist on November 23rd, 1947, at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. His stepfather, Bill Gilchrist “Big Bill”, played a significant role in his life and memories related to farming in Omaha, GA.

Billy was preceded in death by his father, mother, and stepfather. Mr. Herring and his siblings were very close and enjoyed meals together on the weekends as a big family. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Herring Cason; and brothers, Jimmy Earl Herring and David Ricky Herring.

Billy is survived by his sister, Jewel Gilchrist Randall; his daughter, Tonya Michelle Herring; and his son, Brian Frank Herring. He also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Madeline Holcomb, Jon Davis Holcomb, Emmaleigh Herring, and Isabelle Herring.

He graduated from Jordan High School in Columbus, Georgia. He went on to serve as a firefighter with Columbus Fire & EMS, dedicating himself to protecting and serving his community. He was a talented craftsman who enjoyed building houses and later specialized as a trim contractor.

Upon retirement, he moved to Lamont in Florida’s Big Bend Region. He enjoyed fishing along the Econfina River and the Gulf of Mexico. His favorite pastime was fishing these waters with friends and family during the day and then sitting by a campfire at night.

In accordance with Billy’s wishes, there will be no formal services. Instead, his life is being celebrated just as he lived it. Family and friends will gather privately to spread his ashes at his favorite fishing spots on the Econfina River and the Gulf of Mexico. A fitting tribute to a simple, down-to-earth man.

Mr. Herring was a Christian who believed the Lord was his Savior. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. His legacy of hard work and passion for fishing lives on in the hearts of those who shared in his journey.
