Theodore Frederick Groth, 59, of Olympia, Washington, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2025, after a struggle with lymphoma. He was born on April 12, 1965, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Hugh and the late Mary Anne Groth. Ted married Marie Balmain on February 23, 1991.
Ted joined Boy Scout Troop 175 in Brecksville, Ohio, and earned his Eagle Scout badge. He graduated from Brecksville High School, received a full academic scholarship to Case Western Reserve University, and earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, followed by graduate work. Ted met his wife Marie while attending contradances in upstate New York, which they both enjoyed.
During his career with Albany International Corporation, Ted was an expert in the design and manufacture of large belts for paper-making machinery. Ted and Marie enjoyed living in several U.S. states including New York, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Washington and Maryland. They had the wonderful opportunity through Ted’s career of living near Manchester, England for five years before ultimately settling back in Olympia, Washington.
A life-long lover of music, Ted enjoyed singing, playing his concertinas and other instruments, and sharing music with others, especially with the people at Folk at the Barlow in Edgworth, England. He loved sailing his sailboat in the bay on the coast of Olympia, part of Puget Sound. Growing up, Ted was imaginative, kind, and very creative, traits that carried into his adult life.
Predeceased by his mother Mary Anne, Ted is survived by his wife of 34 years, Marie; father Hugh; sister Polly Wheeler (Michael); twin sister Sally Gill (John); brother Jeff (Joy); six nieces and nephews; and nine great-nieces and -nephews.
A private family memorial will take place at a later date. Interment to be at Fairview Cemetery in Richfield, Ohio.
