Sheldon Stowers was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 27, 1958, to Elmer and Katherine Lucille Brown Stowers. Sheldon graduated from John F. Kennedy High and cultivated deep, lasting friendships on 151st Street, including his best friends Dwayne "Chestnut" Reese, Jr. and Bernard Harris. One of his favorite childhood memories is the summer vacations with his family in Williamsport, PA, where they enjoyed the family reunions and the excitement of the Little League World Series. In Cleveland, Sheldon's passion for music blossomed; as a teenager, he and close friends formed a rock band in the garage of his family home.
In 1991, Sheldon relocated to Portland, Oregon, to live with his sister, Kimberly, and brother-in-law, Michael L. Moreland Sr. His extended Moreland family fondly remembers him as "Uncle Sheldon." In 1997, he moved to Tacoma, Washington, and resided there for the remainder of his life.
Living in the Pacific Northwest, he became drawn to outdoor life and enjoyed fishing and crabbing, which he enjoyed with his nephew, Mike. Sheldon loved sports and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Guardians, formerly the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, and, later, the Seattle Seahawks. He cared deeply for his beloved Doberman Pinscher, Ceazar.
Sheldon had a big heart, and the Spanaway Fire Department recognized his bravery in saving a man drowning in Spanaway Lake in the Summer of 2009. He has worked various jobs throughout his life; however, Sheldon especially enjoyed his time at Fort Lewis and his role as a driver delivering oxygen equipment to patients throughout Washington state. He spoke highly about the relationships he built with his co-workers and COPD patients.
Sheldon is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Stowers and Katherine L. Stowers. He leaves many to cherish his memory: his devoted partner, Dorrie Ferguson; his sisters, Dorothea Brown (Sylvester) and Kimberly Moreland (Michael); his nephew Michael Moreland Jr.; and nieces, Katherine Moreland, Kristen Figueroa (Esteban), and Karina Moreland. He also leaves behind many other relatives and friends, including former wives Ok Hyon Stowers and Tamura Keaton Stowers. He will truly be missed.
The family would like to thank the medical team at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital for the care and compassion they showed Sheldon in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life and Memorial Service in Tacoma at Titlow Lodge, 8465 6th Avenue, on April 14, 2025, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the MultiCare Health Foundations.
