Dale Tamara Ensign, affectionately known as "Tammie," passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024, in Olympia, WA at the age of 82. Born in Tacoma and raised in Olympia, Tammie was a beloved wife, mother, friend and educator.
Tammie graduated from Olympia High School in the class of 1960, the last class to graduate from the OHS building across from the state capitol building. She had many friends in Olympia, many of whomgrew up with her from Lincoln Elementary School through Olympia High School. Tammie went on to graduate from Washington State University in 1964 with a Bachelor's degree in elementary education and a lifelong commitment to the "Cougar Spirit." In 1967, she returned to WSU for graduate school earning her Master’s degree in 1970.
Tammie's passion for education was evident throughout her long and distinguished career as an elementary school teacher and principal, having worked in the Bellevue, Tacoma, Colton and North Thurston schools. She devoted her professional life to nurturing young minds, making a positive impact on the many students she taught and mentored over the years. Her commitment to education and her warm, compassionate and encouraging nature left an indelible mark on her students and in the communities in which she worked.
Tammie married Gordon Ensign Jr. (a South Bay boy) on July 30, 1966, and their shared life of nearly 58 years is a testament to their love and lasting bond.
Tammie and Gordon were active boaters, often cruising on their boat “Celebration” in the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, and the waters of British Columbia. Their adventures didn't stop there. Together, Tammie and Gordon visited all fifty state capitals. They went on cruises to Alaska, the Panama Canal, and the Baltic Sea. They took several trips to Europe, visiting nearly every Western European country, and enjoyed many vacations in Mexico and Hawaii.
Beyond her professional life and her travels, Tammie had a variety of interests. She was an avid bridge player, loved immersing herself in books, regularly attended local live theater, found joy in exploring new places, and enjoyed dancing and the occasional glass of crisp Pinot Grigio or a well-made Manhattan cocktail. Tammie also committed considerable time to volunteer work, supporting and contributing to the Seattle Children's Hospital Tom Dooley Guild, the Olympia/Tumwater Foundation, and the North Thurston Education Foundation.
Tammie is survived by her loving husband Gordon, her cherished children Betsy, Dale and her daughter-in-law Gerina, and her grandson Tyson. Additionally, she is survived by close family friend Lisa, who was like another daughter to her. Tammie was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Dale Sweeney of Olympia.
Those who knew Tammie will remember her dedication to education, her vibrant spirit, and the love she shared with her family and friends. She will also be remembered for her infectious laughter that could light up any room and bring smiles to every face.
