Alan “Al” Clifford Bauer, 79, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones in the quiet, steady strength that defined him. Al lived his life with a calm confidence that drew people in – he never met a stranger, and he never hesitated to lend a hand.
Al was born on September 12, 1947, in Port Angeles, Washington, to Clifford Leon Bauer and Ellen Augusta (Backholm) Bauer (both deceased). He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Luana, and his two sons from his first marriage Jeffrey (Mindi) and Bradley (John) and his two children he lovingly welcomed into his heart, Annette and John Michael (Joy), when he married Luana. From his very first date with Luana, Al took special care to include all their children in his life. He is survived by seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, each one held close to his heart.
Al spent his childhood in Oakville, Washington, graduating from Oakville High School in 1965 and attending Grays Harbor Community College on a scholarship. He worked briefly in the Simpson Door Plant in McCleary, Washington, before joining the Navy in 1966 and serving in the Vietnam War as a sonar specialist aboard a submarine which he remembered fondly as “good duty.” After returning home, Al worked as a mechanic at Lew Rents for 11 years and later 24 years with the City of Olympia’s building maintenance department. Al was a master craftsman, capable of fixing anything and leading major construction projects including the current Olympia City Hall.
He filled his days playing his guitar or harmonica, gardening, woodworking, wrenching or spending time with friends playing golf, shooting pool or telling stories. Whenever Al could, he returned to Maui to scuba dive – one of his greatest joys. Always one for having a good time, Al often (lovingly) tormented his friends at Buzz’s Tavern by playing the chicken dance or other assorted polkas on the juke box.
A dedicated member of the McCleary VFW Post #5564, Al supported his community through multiple official roles throughout the years including commander and chaplain.
Al was beloved for his humility, kindness, capability, sense of humor and steady presence. His legacy will be remembered by the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed.
