Roger Earl Custer lived a life defined by love, loyalty, and adventure. Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to Earl and Mabel Custer, he grew up as their treasured only child. His early years took him to Melvindale, Michigan, where his life changed forever when he met a young woman named Sandra Jean VanValkenburg. Roger knew quickly that she was the one. They married on August 5, 1961, beginning a 63‑year journey side by side.
Roger approached life with energy and enthusiasm . In his younger years he loved to run and ride his bike. He demonstrated his commitment by participating in marathons and triathlons even though the swim portion of the event was a challenge for him. As the years went on, Roger found joy in simpler rhythms, especially the nightly happy hour he shared with Sandy on their patio. Those evenings, they would talk, laugh, and watch the day settle. It became one of the great pleasures of his life.
Together, Roger and Sandy built a life rich with experiences. In 1978, they moved to Arizona, and soon after found themselves exploring the world—living in Hong Kong, traveling through Asia, and returning to Europe again and again. Wherever they went, they went together.
Roger’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by Sandy, the love of his life; their children, Carrie Maroney (Kent) and Todd Custer (Anita); five grandchildren—Justin (Hannah), Sean (Kate), Britney (Jacob), Jeremy (Victoria), and Nicholas (Hanna), and ten great‑grandchildren who brought him endless joy.
Roger was deeply loved, and he left behind a legacy of kindness, steadiness, and devotion. His absence will be felt every day, but his memory will continue to guide the family he cherished.
