Phyllis Watkins, beloved mother, grandmother, and community supporter, passed away peacefully at home on August 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis was born on June 23, 1930, in Tonawanda, New York, where she also lived until the age of 22.
Phyllis was the cherished wife of William Watkins, whom she married in 1948. Together, they welcomed three children: Edwin, Deborah, and Bill. In 1963, Phyllis made the bold decision to move with her family from California to Alaska, settling in the Eagle River/Chugiak area. She quickly became a familiar face in the community, working first at the bowling alley and then at the local grocery store in Eagle River. She especially enjoyed working with many high school students whom she helped train as “box boys.” When the local grocery store closed, she began working at Providence Hospital, where she managed the Rose Room until her retirement in 1991.
Phyllis loved and cherished her family above all else. After the passing of her husband, she moved to California to live with her son Bill, daughter-in-law Kathy, and her four young grandchildren, Jessica, Nicholas, Benjamin, and Amy. She continued to spread her love and wisdom. Phyllis played an integral role in their lives, helping to raise them, and eventually traveled back to Alaska with them to live in Petersburg and Kodiak. In 2020, Phyllis moved with her son and his wife to Arizona, eager to be closer to her daughter, Deborah, and son-in-law, John Baley.
Although she did not belong to many community organizations, her dedication to supporting the youth of her community was unwavering, as she believed they were its most valuable asset. While her children and grandchildren were home, Phyllis was actively involved in promoting sports and activities, ensuring that the younger generation had opportunities to thrive.
Phyllis loved playing slot machines, answering questions on game shows, and she was a voracious reader. She crocheted blankets for everyone. Throughout her 95 years, Phyllis embodied love and compassion. She leaves a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband William Robert Watkins, son Edwin Watkins, her parents Harry and Esther Horan, and her siblings Betty, Ike, Esther, Patsy, Raymond, and Sally.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Deborah, and son-in-law, John Baley; her son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Watkins; her grandchildren, Jessica Newell, Angela Walls, Nicholas Watkins, Ben Watkins, and Amy Watkins; and Her great-grandchildren, Lucas Newell, Adam Newell, Ava Walls, and Eisley Watkins.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Alaska when family can all be present, and internment will be at Fort Richardson National Cemetery at that time.
