Carl Dayton Mays

Carl Dayton Mays, 86, of Dewey, Arizona, passed away on August 23rd. Carl lived a long and eventful life, one filled with many experiences, relationships, challenges, and memories. He was a man who loved his family in his own way, and while there were times and years when life created distance between him and those he loved, the bond of family remained. Carl shared many years of his life with his beloved wife, Linda Mays, who preceded him in death. He also helped raise Linda’s daughter, April, whom he loved as his own. April passed before Linda, and both Linda and April remained an important part of Carl’s life and his memories.

Carl is survived by his children, Rod, Brian, Tammy, and Craig; his grandchildren, Joshua, Kera, Shawna, Aaron, Erica, and Branden; his seven great-grandchildren; and his daughter-in-law, Michelle. He is also survived by his sister, Sue, and his nieces, Loria and Ann.

Carl spent much of his working life as a Lobby Ambassador at 625 Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. He enjoyed meeting people and was known for his personality and his ability to make an impression.

Carl had many things he enjoyed throughout his life. He loved fishing, following his New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers, visiting the casino, enjoying nice steakhouses, and sitting down with a good drink and a cigar. These were some of the simple pleasures that brought him happiness.

Carl’s life, like all lives, was not without its challenges. There were times when he was present and times when he was away, but those who loved him will remember the good times, the lessons learned, the memories shared, and the moments that mattered. His passing brings with it sadness, reflection, and the realization that life is made up of both the moments we had and the moments we wished we had. In the end, Carl was our dad, our grandfather, our great-grandfather, our brother, and our family. And that will always matter.

May he now rest peacefully, reunited with Linda and April. He will be remembered by those who loved him and missed by many.

A private celebration of Carl’s life will be held with immediate family.
