Betty Lou Grumbling died on January 29, 2025. Her husband Henry (Hank) preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter Marcia Brixey (Steve); son Kevin Grumbling (Evelyn) and grandchildren Taylor Hamilton; Chase Grumbling (Stephanie) and their children Natalie, Allison, Brandon; Brittany Nicole Smith (Mahonri) and their children, Phoenix, Olivia, Penelope and Gryphon; and son Brian Grumbling and his children Caitlin and Meghan. Betty leaves a brother Ed Nowlin (Dorothy) and two sisters Nadine Pauley and Faye Altiser.
Betty Lou Nowlin Grumbling, daughter of Elva Theodore and Vada Hildred Watson Nowlin was born on November 30, 1932 in Newtown, Missouri.
Betty graduated from high school in 1950 and journeyed to San Francisco, California where she lived with her twin aunts, Thelma and Velma. Later that same year she moved to Chico, California where she attended Chico State College. She met her future husband, Hank the first week in school. They were married on June 3, 1953. Betty and Hank both graduated from Chico State in the summer of 1957. They continued their education and both earned Master Degrees in June 1960. From 1964 through 1968 Betty and Hank's family spent several summers and an entire year in Greeley, Colorado. Both Betty and Hank earned their Doctorate Degrees.
In 1960 the family moved to Visalia, California. Betty taught in elementary and junior high schools until 1970 when she was hired at the College of Sequoias to teach English. She taught there for 18 years before retiring in 1988. After retirement Betty enjoyed traveling, sewing, crewel work, needlepoint, genealogy and Mah Jongg. Betty and Hank moved from their farm in Visalia to Sun City West, Arizona in 1992. When the weather got hot they lived in Show Low where they met many wonderful friends. In 2013 they moved to Royal Oaks Retirement Community. It was a wonderful place to spend the rest of their years together. Betty moved into the Friendship House in July 2021, while Hank continued to live in Assisted Living until his death in January 2023. Betty was surrounded by love from her friends and staff at Friendship House until her death. Donations can be made in Betty's name to the Royal Oaks Foundation.
