Loree Adele Squires “Shorty” (Gastright), 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 30, 2025, in her home in Florida. Born in 1938 in Cincinnati, OH to Frank & Francis Gastright. Shorty first built a thriving career in real estate, where she was admired for her professionalism, perseverance, and ability to connect with people. Yet it was in the 1980s that she made her true mark on Fort Wayne by opening one of the city’s hottest country western bars, Shorty’s Country. Known for its lively atmosphere and championship pool leagues, the place quickly became a favorite hotspot. As one of the first women in the region to own and operate such an establishment, Shorty brought grit, charm, and a whole lot of fun to the local nightlife scene—her crowning achievement and a legacy that still brings smiles to those who remember it.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Squires; her sons, Louis “Butch” Gropengieser and Edward Gropengieser; and her daughter, Love Baumle. She is survived by her daughters, Francis Gunn and Susie Brandenberger, and her son, Joshua Squires, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her laughter, her stories, and her larger-than-life spirit will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be in Florida 10am on November 1st, 2025 at 4221 W Gulf to Lake Hwy, Lecanto, FL 34461
