Hermela "Mela" Carmen Lira, 78, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away on August 13, 2026. Born in Chile on September 21, 1947, Mela moved to the United States at 19 to pursue her passion as a nanny. Over the years, she brought boundless warmth, love, and care into the homes of countless families, remaining deeply beloved by the many children she raised and nurtured.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Melissa; son-in-law, Denver; cherished grandchildren, Freya and Drayke; and her loving sisters, Rosa and Maria. Her legacy of kindness lives on in the hearts of her family and the generations of children she helped shape.
Rather than a formal funeral, the family will host a small birthday celebration of her life on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Pomodoro Café in Gainesville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mela’s memory to her favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
