

Fred B. Simmons, affectionately known as "Papa," 83, of Inverness, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026. Born on May 13, 1943, in Smithfield, Rhode Island, Fred lived a life dedicated to service, adventure, and his beloved family.
Fred built an honorable career in law enforcement and community service. He served with distinction as a Detective and Training Instructor for the Cranston Police Department in Rhode Island, where he also specialized in underwater recovery. Later in life, he brought his work ethic and care for others to his time working with Hoveround.
An avid outdoorsman, Fred felt most at home on or under the water. His favorite hobbies included boating, fishing, and scuba diving. Above all, Fred loved sharing his life stories, bringing joy and wisdom to everyone who sat down to listen to him.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Patty P. Simmons; two daughters and two sons-in-law; and two cherished grandsons. His memory will also be treasured by his step-family, including Reginald Gaskin and Angela, Rodney Gaskin of North Carolina, and Ruekeyta Gaskin, along with three step-grandsons and one step-granddaughter.
He is also survived by his sister, Ann Geppert of Oklahoma; his nieces, Ruth (Todd) and Susie (Joe) and family, all of Oklahoma, and Karen (Shawn) and family of California. Fred was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Fred and Melvina Simmons of Rhode Island.
The family will welcome family and friends at the family home located at 9916 E. Regency Row, Inverness, FL 34450, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:30 AM sharp at the Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513.
