Mary Katherine Hicks, a beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away on July 18, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Panama on September 14, 1952, to John Draheim, an Army doctor, and Ruth Ann Draheim. Her early years were filled with adventure, living in various locations including Kentucky, Maryland and Germany, due to her father's military service. The family settled in Green Bay, Wisconsin during Mary’s high school years, where she attended St. Joseph’s Academy.
Mary spent four fun years at Loretta Heights College in Denver, Colorado, where she earned her degrees in elementary education and special education. It was in Denver that she met the love of her life, David Hicks. They were married in 1974 in Lubbock, Texas. In 1976, they relocated to Spokane, Washington, where they built a life filled with love and joy. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by friends and family, a testament to their enduring love and commitment.
Together, they welcomed two children: a daughter, Laura and a son, Bud. Mary was a devoted mother, instilling in her children the values of kindness, love, and positivity. Her strong faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her through all of life's moments.
Mary dedicated 30 years to teaching special education and elementary education in the Central Valley School District. She also spent several years as a children’s Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church. She was known for her nurturing spirit, patience, and ability to inspire her students. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her dedication to education.
Mary found joy in spending time with her grandchildren, travelling, gardening, golfing, and playing games. She cherished her outings with friends and was known for her hospitality, often entertaining guests in her home with grace and warmth. Throughout her retirement, one of her and David’s favorite traditions was travelling to Hawaii every February. They often met up with their children, grandchildren and dear friends and created many cherished memories during their travels.
Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering positive outlook on life were admired by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of positivity, love and faith.
