Louis Earl Helgert, age 86, died on June 6, 2017. He was born on July 27, 1930 to Earl and Margaret Helgert in Spokane, WA. Louis had a younger sister, Marge who passed away 15 years ago. Louis spent his entire life in the Spokane area. He attended and graduated from Rogers High School. After graduation, he served in the Army from 1951 to 1959. He was a mail handler and he was stationed in Korea for 2 years and then served the rest of his enlistment in the Reserves. After his stint in the Army, he briefly worked for the railroad and then used his experience as a mail handler to begin his career with the US Postal Service. He was a postal worker and was assigned to unload mail cargo from the trains. He retired August 1985 after many years of service. Louis was a member of the Eagles and the VFW. He loved carpentry and used his skills to earn extra money with side jobs throughout the years. He did everything from remodeling and kitchen cabinets to fun yard decorations and fence spinners. His nickname was “Bummy” and he had many friends. Louis married Arlene Tiffany in 1957 and they had 2 daughters Diana and Kimberly. Their only son, Louis Edward Helgert, (Butch), passed away in 2006. Louis was preceded in death by his loving wife Arlene, who passed away in April 1 2008. He is survived by his daughters Diana A. Bruna and Kimberly L. Johnson, husband Curt Johnson. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren Joseph, Daniel, Jessica, Chris, Jason and 6 great-grandchildren. ******************** Dad was a very kind man. He was always helping his neighbors and taking care of his flowers and yard. He loved his goodies: cookies, Cheetos, and all sweets! Dad really enjoyed picking up the neighbor’s mail every day and taking it over to her. He would sit and chat with her while drinking coffee. I really believe this made his day having this to look forward to. My memories of my dad was going with him when he did his side jobs, I would help get tools for him and just watch in wonder as he made beautiful cabinets, and remodeled kitchens. (daughter Diana Bruna) ******************** My Grandpa was a great guy. It’s still hard to believe he’s not here anymore. We weren’t always that close, but throughout the years we became a lot closer. From the phone calls, where half the time we both didn’t know what to say, but somehow still kept a conversation going for a half hour, to our weekend visits up to see him, which we always looked forward to. I love that he was here for my daughter to form a relationship with him. McKenzie, his great-granddaughter, always loved going up and playing with all the little gadgets that he had, especially his barking dog and the little Jeep that flipped around. He always enjoyed the long talks he would have with my husband, Jesse Gould. I think that he enjoyed that the most, when we would come over and he and Jesse would talk and talk. Grandpa, I miss you so much but I know you are right where you want to be, which is with Grandma again. I love you. Until we meet again. (granddaughter Jessica Gould) ********************
