In her early years, Loretta worked in her father’s bakery making donuts—an experience she often recalled with fondness. She graduated from Rock Springs High School in 1958 and went on to attend the University of Wyoming, completing her education degree in just three years. Loretta began her math teaching career in Cheyenne, Wyoming, later moving to Seattle, Washington, before settling in Spokane in 1967. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Eastern Washington State College in 1968. Loretta continued teaching in Spokane at Gary Junior High and ultimately served as the math department head at Rogers High School, where she retired after a long and dedicated career.
Loretta married the love of her life, Richard Atwood, in Moose, Wyoming, with the Grand Tetons as their backdrop, on July 6, 1962. In 1971, they built their family home on the Spokane River, where they raised their two children, Greg Atwood and Kari Bull, creating a home filled with warmth, adventure, and deep family connection.
A woman of many talents and interests, Loretta earned her private pilot’s license in Seattle in 1963. She enjoyed classic car shows with the Hassie Club, golfing with friends, and later took up motorcycling with Dick—including a memorable trip to Sturgis, South Dakota. She loved dressing up and competing in Cowboy Western Shooting events, where she was known by her spirited alias, “Wyoming Bell.” After retiring, Loretta embraced winter life in Apache Junction, Arizona, becoming an active member of the Roadhaven Art Club and discovering a passion for watercolor painting.
Loretta is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard Atwood; her children Greg Atwood (Angela) and Kari Bull (Travis); and her four grandchildren, Remington (Chris), Addison, Garrett, and McKenna.
