Kevin Phillip “Kip” Scrivner passed away on September 30, 2026, at his home in Pullman following a sudden diagnosis of brain cancer. He was born in Pendleton, Oregon, on September 14, 1951, and had fond memories of growing up on the family ranch near Heppner, Oregon. The family later moved briefly to Lewiston, Idaho, where he excelled in baseball and ultimately settled in Spokane where he attended Shadle Park High School.
In 1969, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving two tours in Vietnam. He earned two Purple Hearts, a Combat Action Ribbon, and a Bronze Star. His military service and the friendships he made with fellow veterans remained an important part of his life.
Returning to Spokane, he met and married the love of his life, 19-year old Debbie McClarty. Debbie has always said “it was love at first sight” and for over 52 years they were happily married and truly enjoyed each other’s company. Cherished sons Sean and Ryan completed their family. Kevin was a loving, dedicated husband and his family came first. After learning of his diagnosis, he and Debbie commented “we have had a great run” and faced his illness together as a family.
While working and raising a young family, he attended and graduated from Eastern Washington University. The family moved to Pullman, where he worked as a Veterans Representative and employment counselor with the Washington State Employment Security Department. During that time Kevin created a veterans support group that remained active for a long time.
Kevin and Debbie enjoyed travel. A few memorable trips were to Normandy, Omaha Beach, Paris, London, and Hawaii. In 2024, they toured Ireland to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They attended and enjoyed numerous concerts and musicals and for many years traveled to Reno for the Reno Blues Festival. Las Vegas was one of their special places to visit. Their two most “happy places” were the Wallowa area and Newport, Oregon
He was an avid hunter and loved fishing. Kevin was knowledgeable about and enjoyed researching historic firearms and knives. He was also a voracious reader, with a particular interest in history and politics. Both he and his family were WSU Cougars, Seattle Seahawks, and Mariners fans.
Kevin looked forward to his weekly social groups with both longtime friends and new acquaintances. His optimistic outlook and great sense of humor brought joy to those around him. He was, in every sense, a true Renaissance man.
He is survived by his soul-mate, Debbie; sons, Sean (Lisa) and Ryan; grandchildren, Evan and Arabelle; brother, Gordon (Gil) Scrivner; brothers-in-law, Dave, Mike, and Doug; and nieces and nephews. His parents, Alyce and William Scrivner, and brother, Kennon, preceded him in death.
A heartfelt thank you to Pullman Regional Hospital, Kootenai Health, Gentiva Hospice, and Norco. Their knowledge, compassion, and support helped Kevin and family navigate this unexpected and difficult journey. They are truly angels on earth.
