Eldon was born to Guy and Clara Pattee in Wendling, Oregon on April 13, 1927, the fourth of five children. He passed away on August 15, 2023, at the age of 96. He met the love of his life, Florence V. McClure, in 1949 and proposed on August 15, 1953. They were married in a small church in Mohawk, Oregon on October 18, 1953, just short of seventy years.
Entering the army upon graduating from high school, Eldon served in Panama toward the end of World War II. Upon discharge, he attended the University of Oregon, graduating with a degree in geology in 1952.
Eldon was a licensed Professional Geologist in Idaho and a licensed Mining Engineer in Washington. He worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines - Western Field Office for thirty years. He authored or co-authored numerous publications regarding the study of beryllium and mineral resources in the Northwest Wilderness Areas.
Living a Christian life, Eldon served as a Deacon at Whitworth and Northwood Presbyterian Churches. He also was a member of the Country Homes Kiwanis for many years. Eldon liked to ski, hike, fish, play the organ (as well as accordion and harmonica), enjoy his dogs, and travel with Florence. He also was a great handyman with his motto being: “Why buy when you can make it.”
For thirty years he hiked in the mountains north of Spokane with friends, “the Four Geezers.” He was fond of saying, “Any day in the hills is a good day.” Eldon was delighted with Christmas tree hunting and any time spent when the family was together.
Eldon is survived by his wife Florence, daughter Robin (James Miller), daughter Karen (Tom Decker), and son James Pattee (Kathy Butler); his grandchildren, Sarah (Matt), Sam (Erin), Beth, Naomi, Jennifer (Aaron), Brenden (Jennifer) and Jon (Courtney). Great Grandchildren: Andrew, Madeline, Gus, Max, Lance, Benson, and Harper.
The family wishes to thank Fairwood Assisted Living and Horizon Hospice staff. In lieu of flowers, memorials to any of these organizations in Eldon’s name would be gratefully appreciated: Horizon Hospice, Dartford Cemetery Association, or Salvation Army’s Sally House.
Following his wishes, there will be a private family service to be held at a future date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/spokane-cremation for the Pattee family.
