Mike, as his friends and family affectionately called him, did not fancy offering too many smiles, but he was the dry humor king. It wasn’t uncommon for him to make an unexpected comment among friends and suddenly the room filled with laughter; Mike maintaining a straight face all the while. He never liked attention, and scoffed at accolades of any kind, yet he was incredibly generous, and he made and kept friends wherever he went. The cashier at the local grocery store. The nurse assistant at his Dr’s office. The waitress at his favorite restaurant. It was important that he always made people feel valued.
Mike spent most of his summers at Kibby Creek, a vacation campground, in Luddington, MI, where he maintained his massive garden, mostly to provide produce to his neighbors and family. He took pride in his stock and cultivated it like a full time job.
Mike was known for his grumpiness. So much that if he appeared quiet, or wasn’t in a mood to debate, those around him knew something was wrong. Despite his rough exterior, under all of his layers revealed the biggest, kindest heart that loved to make a difference and remain anonymous from doing so whenever possible. He baked for all of his friends, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, delivered hams and turkeys to the churches in the neighborhood, and spent every Christmas Day shopping for the people who meant the most to him, and delivering desserts and donations to places he frequented throughout the year.
He was preceded in death by his parents Vincent and Anna Gach. He is survived by his brother Paul; Children Michael and Bobby; Daughter-in-law Sarah; Stepdaughter Hillary; Granddaughters Audrianna and Rue, loving friends and neighbors, and his “better half” life partner, Sandy, their 2 dogs Bailey and Sadie.
