Paul Calvin Visser was born on August 5, 1936, in Flint, Michigan, where he was raised alongside nine brothers and two sisters. From an early age, Paul learned the values of hard work, service, and faith; principles that guided him throughout a remarkable life of leadership and generosity.
Paul began his career as an apprentice electrician in 1954, later becoming a journeyman. His dedication to public service led him to serve as an assistant to U.S. Congressman Donald Riegle from 1966 to 1971. In 1971, Paul joined The Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company as an agent, embarking on a 26-year career marked by excellence and integrity. From 1973 to 1975, he also served as Mayor of the City of Flint, demonstrating his deep commitment to his community.
While with MassMutual, Paul earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations, as well as a Master of Science in Financial Services from The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. His professional accomplishments were extensive: he was named Flint Agent of the Year 13 times, achieved Million Dollar Round Table status for 25 years, and served as president of the 5,000-member MassMutual National Agents Association in the late 1980s.
Paul’s dedication extended well beyond his profession. He held leadership roles with United Way, Goodwill Industries, the Salvation Army, and served as president of the Flint Rotary Club. He was the founding Chairman of the Flint Cultural Center Corporation and played a pivotal role in its early success. In recognition of his leadership in the successful reorganization of the Flint Cultural Center, Paul was named C.S. Mott Citizen of the Year in 1998 by the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce. In 2022, he was inducted into the Kearsley High School Hall of Fame, honoring his lifetime of achievement and service.
In 2015, Paul was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Over the following years, he was forced to give up beloved pastimes such as golf and woodworking, yet he faced these challenges with grace, perseverance, and faith.
Throughout his accomplished life, Paul’s greatest priorities never wavered: his unwavering belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and his devotion to family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Margaret Visser; daughters Paige Barrie (Robin), Paula Wilson (Doug), Peggy Visser, and Christina Moore (David); son Stephen Visser (Judy); brothers David Visser (Beverly), Kenneth Visser (Nancy), Robert Visser, and Ray Visser (Suzanne); as well as 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In accordance with his wishes, Paul will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at Tyrone Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fenton, Michigan, on Friday, January 23, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow.
Memorial donations may be made in Paul’s honor to the American Lung Association or Tyrone Covenant Presbyterian Church.
