The son of William & Ida (Meusling) Burghardt, he was born on May 15, 1931 in Romulus. Lewis was a proud U.S Army veteran, who fought in the Korean War as an Infantry Combat Medic earning (2) Bronze Stars among other metals and ribbons. After the service he became a railroad Conductor and retired from CSX after 46 years of service.
Throughout his life he enjoyed nature, gardening, fixing cars and visiting with his grandchildren/great-grandchildren. He was a proud member of the VFW, American Legion and regularly donated to a wide variety of veteran organizations. He enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers and Lions. He had a great wealth of knowledge in science, nature, history and politics which he enjoyed sharing and debating with all. He was a truly great man loved by his family and will be dearly missed.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; daughter, Mary Patrice Burghardt; siblings, Ivedell Brandes, Marion Burghardt, Elmer Burghardt, Bernice Knofski, Edward Burghardt, Minnie Eicholtz, Doris Burghardt and Roy Burghardt. Surviving is his son Lewis (Edith) Burghardt Jr. and step son, Phillip Thompson; grandchildren, Phillip (Betty) Cannon, Felicia Burghardt, Vincent (Kaitlin) Burghardt, Paige (Devon) Burghardt, Chelsea Carpenter, Amanda Hartley-Cooke and Jeffery Carpenter along with scores of great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 9th at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd, Holly, MI 48442 with full military honors.
