Kathy graduated from the high school class of 1969 at Groves High School, Birmingham, MI. Following high school, Kathy graduated from Michigan State University and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling at Oakland University. After a short period in that career, Kathy became the city cable TV manager for the City of Southfield where she retired after 32 years.
Kathy was married for 51 years following a story book romance originating with a horse-drawn carriage ride on Mackinac Island. Kathy, a newly hired seamstress for the Grand Hotel, was just walking out of the hotel getting off work when Greg (Sherm) was coming down the Grand Boulevard in his empty horse-driven taxi cab and offered her a ride downtown. As a side note, Sherm had spotted Kathy walking downtown the day before and was attracted to her long legs in a pair of shorts. Kathy accepted the offer and got in the cab for the ride downtown. Kathy and Sherm got together that night and, well . . . the rest is history. So it was the long legs that attracted Sherm, but the soft, caring, compassionate heart that endeared him.
In Kathy’s spare time she loved to make a lot of her own clothes in high school, connect with her church family, take walks, sit on a sandy Lake Michigan beach, watching the birds at the feeders and bird bath, listening to smooth jazz and enjoying smooth jazz cruises, re-visiting Mackinac Island, reading, and the most important of all was socializing with friends.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Greg (Sherm), and son, Eric.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Dorothy Widerstedt, and sibling, Robert (Rob).
Family and Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life memorial service which will take place at the Unity of Royal Oak Church, 2500 Crooks Rd, Royal Oak, MI on June 27, Saturday beginning at 12:00. A luncheon will be served after the service.
