Joseph Michael Maguire, of Novi, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on June 26, 1934, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Joe spent his formative years in Cork Town, Detroit.
A dedicated lifelong educator, Joe’s pursuit of knowledge was lifelong. He graduated from Henry Ford Trade School (the last graduating class), served in the Navy for four years. With the help of the GI-Bill, Joe earned a BS from Wayne State University, an MS from the University of Tennessee, and a second MS from the University of South Dakota. His passion for learning was matched only by his dedication to sharing it with others. Joe had a fulfilling 38-year career as a secondary and post-secondary teacher, shaping the minds of countless students.
Beyond the classroom, Joe’s interests ranged from gardening/bonsai, to the intricate workings of steam engines and the satisfying craft of woodworking. He was equally at home tackling home improvement projects, immersed in a good book, enjoying music, perfecting his golf swing, or exploring new corners of the world through travel. Joe also appreciated the simple pleasures in life, like a well-stocked hardware store and a perfectly grilled hot dog or hamburger.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and John, his brother, John, and his grandson, Patrick. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his wife, Shirley, his children, Joel, Andy, and AnnMarie, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joe’s life at a Mass at Holy Family Church in Novi, Michigan, on February 22 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the church gathering area.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Joe’s memory may consider a donation to Angela Hospice or the University of Michigan’s “My Heart To Your Heart” program.
