With a heart full of laughter and a life rooted in service, James “Jim” Zalba lived each day with purpose, compassion, and an infectious sense of humor. He was an active member of his community and church--someone who always found ways to lift others up and bring them together.
Jim’s warmth and wit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. A proud graduate of St. Paul Seminary in Saginaw, Michigan, Jim began his journey at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado, and later earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Wayne State University. His career reflected his deep care for others—he led the Foster Grandparent Program, helping retirees connect with individuals with special needs, and later served the state of Michigan as a social worker, ensuring the well-being of residents in homes for the elderly and disabled.
Outside of work, Jim was a skilled woodworker who filled his home—and those of loved ones—with handcrafted tables, benches, and decorations made with care. He had a love for travel, especially when visiting his daughters and grandchildren, often choosing charming bed and breakfasts to enhance the journey. Whether cheering on Michigan State or sharing a laugh at a family or friend gathering, Jim brought joy to every moment.
He was a dedicated volunteer, giving his time generously to causes close to his heart, including grief counseling for those navigating loss. But perhaps his greatest gift was his humor—witty, light-hearted, and sometimes corny. Jim could brighten a room with his laughter and was happiest when those around him were smiling. He leaves behind a legacy of care, laughter, and a life well-lived in the service of others. He will be greatly missed.
Jim is survived by his children: Beth and her husband, John Browe; Jeanette Zalba; and his stepdaughters, Kathleen Czop and her husband, Paul Chambre, and Meegan Czop and her partner, Jared Metzner. He was a proud grandfather to Ashley and her husband, Ethan Goddard, and to Cody and his wife, Chelsea Browe, as well as a loving great-grandfather to his adored great-granddaughter, Madeline.
He is also survived by his siblings: Connie (James) Andres, David (Deanna) Zalba, Valerie (Brian) Howey, and Anthony “Chris” (Sharon) Zalba, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 33 years, Maureen; his sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Al Judzis; and his parents, Alfonso and Evelyn Zalba.
A memorial service and celebration of Jim’s life will be held in July 2025.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to St. Martha Parish in Okemos, Catholic Charities of Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton Counties, or Cristo Rey Community Center in Lansing.
