Carol Jean Whitworth

Carol J. Whitworth of East Lansing passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026 at the age of 76. She is survived by son Jeremy (Jen) Whitworth; daughter Kristen Duke; stepson Shannon (Kathleen) Whitworth and grandchildren Ryleigh, Grace, Olivia, Alexander, Ford and Reagan; sister Jane Hartwig, brother David (Betsy) Hendricks; nieces Bethany and Rachel. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Whitworth, and by her parents Gordon and Joyce Hendricks.

She was a proud graduate of Michigan State University. Following graduation, she started working for the Ingham County Youth Center and continued working for the Ingham County court system where she served as a Child and Senior Welfare Worker. From 1984 until her retirement in 2002, she served as an Intake Referee for the Ingham County Probate Court.

As an avid fan of the MSU football and basketball teams, Carol enjoyed attending or watching their games. Tailgating or arranging watch parties was her specialty. She loved to travel across the world, but her favorite places were living in East Lansing, Bonita Bay, Florida or camping at Lake Michigan State Parks. Friends remember her as fiercely independent and highly competitive, especially when playing cards. Playing for a dollar made it all the better, especially when she won. She loved to shop and there was always great pleasure when she found a good deal. Throughout her life, Carol valued the importance of having friends and maintained long-term friendships from high school, college, work, and with neighbors both in East Lansing and Bonita Bay. Most recently, she made friends with many at Independence Village during her short time there.

Carol’s Christian faith was very important to her. She participated in bible study groups that were instrumental in helping her throughout her life. A memorial service will be held on October 2nd, at 11 am (visitation at 10 am) at New Hope Church at 1340 Haslett Road, Haslett, MI.
