Carol Louise Jones, age 84, of Shelby Twp., passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at home surrounded by family. The daughter of Thomas & Phyllis (Pennazoli) Horton, she was born on November 9, 1936 in Detroit.
A devout Christian, Carol lived a selfless life dedicated to her faith, family, and community. Her love for the Lord, and family was above all else. She always went out of her way to make her family, friends, and even strangers feel special. Carol’s love and kindness was infectious.
Carol had a quiet strength backed by her unwavering faith. She was a wonderful listener, and would cry with you or laugh with you. In fact, she laughed all the time. Carol was fun to be around, and she had a calming effect on others. She spent her most cherished time with family and was happiest when she was able to host a big Italian style meal for them. She had a subtle quick wit about her that could always boost your spirit, whether a simple compliment or a smile sent your way.
She worked at General Motors for 27 years before retiring in 1993. Carol loved spending her time playing cards and dominoes with friends in her apartment building. She was always excited to tell the family about her “big winnings”—which usually amounted to no more than $5 on a lucky day. In her down time, Carol loved to watch Jeopardy or Detroit Tigers baseball. She was the biggest supporter of her children and grandchildren every single day, no matter the occasion. From weekly taco dinners, to cheering on the sidelines of a sporting event, to checking in on FaceTime— whether in-person or far away, her presence could always turn your day around for the better.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill Horton; and sister, Carol Anne Horton. Survived are her children, Jay (Karen) Jones, Rick (Cathy) Jones and Susie (Mike) Routledge; grandchildren, Derek (Rachael) Jones, Dayna (Caleb) Voetberg, Daniel, Abigail, Luke, William, Margaret, Mary, Elijah, Natalie, Jude, Gideon; great grandchild, Amelia; sister-in-law, Doris Horton; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service will be at 3:00 PM on Friday, July 9, 2021 at Kensington Church Chapel, 1825 E Square Lake Road, Troy, MI 48085.
