Arno was a veteran of the World War II. He served in the Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 327th Glider Infantry of the 101st Airborne. He fought in D-Day, Holland, Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne and the march to Berchtesgaden, Germany. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with Four Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead. During his service he earned the rank of Corporal. His military occupation was anti-tank gunner, and his military qualifications included expert Anti-tank Gunner, and Combat Infantry. He participated in two glider missions – D-Day and Holland. In 2012, Arno was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Regiment at Fort Campbell.
Arno spent 37 years at J.L. Hudson, as an upholsterer. He also taught upholstery in adult education for 50 years in two different school districts.
Mr. Whitbread is survived by his son, James Whitbread. He also leaves behind four grandchildren – Brett, Bryan, Matthew and Amanda; and 10 great grandchildren – Damien, Jaden Ethan, Brenna, Briana, Maverick, Bryce, Presley, Riley and Kade. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth and his daughter Sue Ann.
Services will be held Saturday, February 2nd – 10 am visitation and 11 am service at Hope United Church of Christ in Fraser.
