Peter Katsis

Peter was born and raised in Chicago and spent more than four decades helping shape some of the defining careers in modern music.

When he was 23, he discovered and began managing his first group, the Chicago industrial rock band Ministry.

During the mid-1980s, Peter was also closely involved with Chicago’s emerging house-music scene, representing artists including Marshall Jefferson and Adonis and helping arrange early performances in New York and London.

He later moved to Los Angeles and, as a partner at The Firm, helped guide the careers of artists including the Backstreet Boys, Enrique Iglesias, Korn, Snoop Dogg, Audioslave, Limp Bizkit and Staind, among many others.

Peter was fearless and famously unafraid to speak his mind, but beneath that formidable exterior was a deeply kind man and a true gentleman. It was a combination that earned him extraordinary respect and loyalty throughout his life.

Whether building a career, solving an impossible problem or simply bringing people together at the Chateau Marmont, Peter had a way of creating magic—and of making those around him feel braver, more inspired and more alive just by being in his presence.

In 1999, Peter helped strategize the Backstreet Boys’ Into the Millennium Tour. The tour set a then-Ticketmaster record when 735,000 tickets were sold in less than an hour. A 2002 Vanity Fair profile described Peter as “the best manager in the music business, period.”

In 2005, he helped produce Audioslave’s historic free concert in Havana, Cuba, attended by more than 100,000 people.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Peter managed artists including Bush, The Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction, Liz Phair and Ice Cube, among others.

Above all, Peter cherished his family. He was an enormously proud and devoted father to his son, Ian, and shared an exceptionally close bond with his sister, Anastasia, with whom he spoke every day. He also shared an extraordinary and enduring bond with his former wife, Catherine Townsend, a relationship that remained deeply important throughout his life.

Following his death, many of the artists Peter had worked with posted touching tributes on social media.

Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale called Peter “our visionary, our leader and our most great friend” in an Instagram post. “He was more to me than just my manager. He believed in me in ways no one does,” he wrote. “There was simply nobody I was closer to.”

“He was an incredible manager, but an even better friend,” Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro wrote. “Peter was one of the last of the true old-school greats.”

Navarro recalled that Peter had worked his way up through the music business “from the ground floor,” building his career through hard work and personal relationships. “Our relationship was never just manager and client. We were family.”

Peter’s family said in a statement:

“To the world, Peter was one of the most influential music managers of his generation. His vision, instincts and fierce belief in his artists helped shape some of the most important careers in music for more than four decades. He saw possibilities others didn’t, inspired those around him to dream bigger, and fought relentlessly for the people and artists he believed in.

“Peter was simply larger than life. He loved fiercely, laughed loudly and lived with extraordinary courage and conviction. Above everything else, he loved his family. He was our strength, our fiercest advocate, and the person we could always count on to believe anything was possible.

“The void he leaves in our lives and our hearts is immeasurable.

“We are profoundly grateful for the extraordinary outpouring of love and support Peter and our family received during these last difficult weeks.

“Peter believed that some names live forever. Peter Katsis will be one of them.”

Katsis was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Catherine Katsis, and his sister, Theon Katsis. He is survived by his son, Ian Wilkerson Katsis, and his sister, Anastasia Katsis.
