Parents: Guy Stanton Permaul and Florence Permaul
Moved to then British Guyana (Now just Guyana)
Attended Queens College in British Guyana, but completed high school at Hoover High School (1957) in Glendale CA, after immigrating to United States, as his father fought in WWII for the US and became a naturalized US Citizen. Attended University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), majored in Political Science followed by some graduate work in Medieval History, while working at UCLA the Residence Halls and UCLA Extension. His first full time job (1966) was with the County of Los Angeles as a Personnel Analyst. He retired from the County in Year 2000 completing a career of taking on increased responsibilities in Human Resources Department.
He met his wife, Jane Szutu (Permaul) in 1964 when both were working at the UCLA Residence Halls and married in 1967 at his parents’ home in Sunland CA.
They had their first child, Lawrence Permaul, in 1972 and moved to the Palisades shortly thereafter in September 1973, because of the excellent public schools in that neighborhood. Their second child, Lauren Permaul, joined the family in 1981.
He enjoyed the Palisades community and was a long time member of the local chapter of the Optimists serving twice as the president. He also served a term on the Community Council.
As an Optimist, he personified what the organization stands for. The Optimist creed describes him to a “tee”. Yes, golf was another love of his. Following his retirement he formed a golf group (Fearsome Foursome) that included Connie Solum, Chuck McGlothlin and Alan Hanson, (2 Bruins, 2 Trojans,---2 Democrats, 2 Republicans) who played and enjoyed great camaraderie for 20 years.
He also enjoyed sports and was a die-hard BRUIN, having lettered in Soccer while a student and followed the Football and Men’s Basketball Teams till the end of his life. He, along with his wife, were honored for having been members of the John Wooden Athletic Fund for 55 years.
Shortly after retirement, he was introduced to the PLATO Society, which was affiliated with UCLA Extension, and later became independent. He loved the Self Study Groups; led some and coordinated some. Through PLATO, he made additional friends whom he enjoyed beyond studying together.
His family was important to him, beyond his immediate family. Since his parents passed some years ago, he was seen as the “patriarch” of the Permaul and Lawrence (his mother’s side) family scattered primarily in the US, Canada, and England.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, and grown children, Lauren and Larry, his three grandsons, Ethan, Camden and Harrison, and his siblings, Jammel Turner and Nadesan Permaul, and many more cousins, nephews and nieces and their families, not to mention the many “best friends” he had.
He had been contending with serious heart decease for many years. It was clear that, as he aged, the heart grew weaker. Nevertheless, his death was sudden and unexpected on February 18 following a heart attack from which he never gained consciousness.
He is loved and blessed, and will be missed.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/sherman-oaks-cremation for the Permaul family.
