

Malcolm "Mal" Rodney Riley, a long time resident of Brentwood (Los Angeles) and Pacific Palisades, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2022 in Northridge, CA. He was born June 20, 1932 in Santa Monica, California and married Ellie Riley in 1950 in Monterey, CA and remained married to her for 72 years. Mal is survived by his wife Ellie, son Dan, daughter in law Kay and four (4) grandchildren: Connor, Tyler Lauren and Nick. Mal was preceded in death by his first son Cameron.
Mal grew up in greater Los Angeles and attended University "Uni" High School, followed by getting his undergraduate degree from his beloved UCLA alma mater where he also competed collegiately in track and was an All-American in volleyball. Mal loved hiking and the ocean which led him to the US Navy as a Lieutenant on a Destroyer from 1954 to 1962. Mal received his Masters of Business Administration degree from Pepperdine University in 1983.
Mal’s heralded business career involved a long span in the commercial real estate business which included corporate, managerial and development. Mal and partners developed and managed over 41 commercial projects over his career and was one of the original pioneers of the “Power Center” concept - a large shopping center anchored by a preponderance of major mid to large box stores. He often lectured in courses on shopping center development and commercial real estate at many universities, seminars and meetings across the country. Mal served as President of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), chairman of California Business Properties Association, a board member director for BRE Properties Inc., board member for Bixby Land, advisory board member of Anderson Graduate School, UCLA and Pepperdine University and a member of UCLA Foundation Board of Trustees and Urban Land Institute.
