away peacefully on January 29th at her home in Los Angeles. She had just celebrated
her 90th birthday on January 9th. She was preceded in death by her loving brother
Joseph Fine, his daughter and her niece Debia (Fine) McCulloch, and an older brother,
Leibel Fanaberia.
Leah received her Master’s degree in theoretical math from Emory University, and
began a trailblazing career in computer programming at the infancy of this
groundbreaking field. She worked for Lockheed, System Development Corporation (part
of the Rand Corporation at the time), and Farmers Insurance Group.
After retirement, Leah dedicated herself and her artistic skills to creating beautiful
fiber works, such as basketry and woven art, using natural materials like kelp and other
seaweed. Her works were included in many exhibitions and galleries around the United
States, and can be found online by searching under “Leah Danberg.”
Her love of the arts extended to music as well. Leah was a longtime supporter of
the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Opera, spending many afternoons
and evenings enjoying their performances.
During retirement, Leah also formed a group who met weekly to study Yiddish, a
tribute to her father who spent most of his career teaching the language. She spent
many hours in her kitchen and could make a delicious apricot jam. Her neighbors often
saw her in the garden, tending to her beautiful camellias, hibiscus, clivia and various
potted plants (some in pots she made herself). And she was dedicated to the care of
several lucky cats during her adult life.
Leah is survived by her nieces Rebecca (Fine) Rose and Amanda (Fine) Hazell,
her sister-in-law Sara Steinberg Fine, many grandnieces and nephews, her cousin
Daniel Schteingart and many other cousins, friends, and caregivers. May her memory
be a blessing.
Leah’s ashes were scattered at sea. In lieu of a traditional memorial service, Leah’s wish was for her family and friends to remember and celebrate her life and their relationship with her in whatever way each of them finds meaningful and comforting.
