On Saturday, October 1, 2022, Jim Nyholt DVM, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, veterinarian, friend, mentor, leader, and community figure, passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was seventy-five. Jim was born in 1947, to Edith and Fred Nyholt in Brighton, Colorado. Jim was raised on a farm in Colorado with his sister Susan and grew up with a love for animals. Jim graduated from Colorado State University with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. That same year he began working at Schumann Animal Hospital, which he purchased in 1980 and named Antelope Valley Animal Hospital. Jim had three children: Josh, Jamie, and Jenna who he loved tremendously.
Jim dedicated his life to the well-being of animals and giving back to the community through 4-H and the Antelope Valley Fair. Jim’s passion for animals and teaching led him to lead the Quartz Hill 4-H Club as community leader for 20 years. In 2015, Jim was honored to be Grand Marshal of the Antelope Valley Fair Parade, an honor he was very touched by. He was recognized for his contributions to the Antelope Valley Fair Livestock Council, 4-H community, Heifer Project, and his role as Antelope Valley Fair Veterinarian. He was also a member of the Lancaster, Palmdale and Quartz Hill Chambers of Commerce, the California Veterinary Medical Association, Southern California Veterinary Medical Association and was a president of the Antelope Valley Medical Association.
Beyond his passion and love for his practice, clients and community, Jim was first and foremost a dedicated and loving father and grandfather to his three children and four grandchildren. He will be remembered for his unconditional love, unyielding support, big hugs, and silly humor. Family and friends remember him as their “rock,” remarkable, one-of-a-kind, inspirational, a mentor, a role model, a shoulder to cry on, compassionate, and overall, a great man!
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 10 am at St. Junipero Serra Parish, 42121 60th Street West, Lancaster, Ca 93536. Light refreshments will follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed in Dr. Nyholt's name to the Antelope Valley 4-H District Council or the Antelope Valley Fair Livestock Council.
