Our Dad, Howard Seymour Bilow (aka Hirsh), passed away June 28, 2023. Born November 8, 1932, he was 90 years old. He passed away peacefully at the Sepulveda VA hospice. He was such a strong man, it’s hard to believe he wasn’t invincible. He was a Marine during the Korean War, but he was also a man who marched for peace. He has such loving and devoted friends who he’s known for decades. He was a brilliant poet and hosted many poetry readings and parties over the years. He was also a master at watercolor painting and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Art from California State University, Northridge. Dad’s careers included being a hair stylist, building contractor, and master craftsman.
He loved being in nature. He enjoyed wilderness survival, hiking, camping, and going on mushroom forays in the forest. He was devoted to his yoga practice until the very end of his life. His favorite place to hang out was in his garden which he called his rainforest. He loved to read and he loved to dance. He was an old hippie at heart and he was a pretty cool dude!
As a father he would always show up for us in emergencies and was amazing in a crisis. He nurtured our love of nature, yoga, reading, and the arts. We always knew we were loved.
He enjoyed being with family and we had some amazing family reunions. He was proud of all four of his kids. He is survived by three of his children, Cheryl Weinstein, Amber Bilow, and Ari Bilow, as well as his ex-wife/dear friend of nearly 60 years, Susan Bilow. He also leaves behind five grandchildren (Nic, Rachel, Jason, Noah, and Yuna) and five great grandchildren (Donovan, Lennon, Wilder, Solomon, and Zen).
You will be missed Dad. May you rest in peace and dance in heaven. Love always, Cheryl, Amber, and Ari
